Seit der Gründung seines eigenen Kammermusikensembles im Jahr 2001, dem Akanthus Ensemble Berlin, ist es sein Anliegen, neue Wege in der Aufführung und im Verständnis von klassischer Musik zu gehen und zu fördern. In seinen Konzerten pflegt er nicht nur das traditionelle und zeitgenössische Repertoire für Streichinstrumente und Klavier. Er arbeitet auch mit Gastsolisten anderer Instrumentengruppen zusammen, lässt Stile der Unterhaltungsmusik wie argentinischen Tango oder populäre russische Musik in seine Programme miteinfließen und produziert eigene CDs.
Mit seinen Moderationen in deutscher, englischer oder französischer Sprache zu den gespielten Werken, den Komponisten und den Musikern auf der Bühne ermöglicht er dem Publikum einen interessanten und unterhaltsamen Einblick aus der Sicht eines erfahrenen Musikers in das jeweilige Programm. Symphonie-Orchester Berlin moderierte er eine Kammermusikreihe zu
Mozarts 250sten Geburtstag und mehrere Kinderkonzerte, für die er sich
besonders einsetzt, weil er weiß, dass die Zukunft unserer
musikalischen Erbes vor allem auch in den Händen der jungen Generation
liegt. Im Sommer 2006 und 2007 führte er durch die Programme der ‚Forest Hill Musical Days’ in San Francisco. Seit Erhalt der Green Card gibt er Recitals in San Francisco und Umgebung, wird als Gaststimmführer der 2. Violinen im Berkeley Symphony Orchestra eingeladen und verteilt nunmehr seine musikalischen Aktivitäten auf beide Kontinente.
Karsten Windt plant und gestaltet auch besondere Kulturevents, wie z.B. 2005 das Eröffnungskonzert zum ‚Salon Noir’ im Rahmen der großen „Melancholie“-Ausstellung in der Neuen Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Dabei wurden Musikaufführungen mit der Leinwand-Projektion von ausgestellten Kunstwerken und originalen Partituren zu einem neuartigen Gesamtkunstwerk verbunden. In Zusammenarbeit mit erstklassigen Restaurants und Hotels entstehen zudem anspruchsvolle und zugleich unterhaltsame musikalisch-kulinarische Events, bei denen Kochkunst, Weinauswahl und Musik perfekt aufeinander abgestimmt werden - ein Konzept, das auch Firmenveranstaltungen und vielen andere festlichen Anlässen einen ganz besonderen Wert verleiht.

Born in Berlin, Karsten Windt graduated from the Universitaet der Kuenste in Berlin and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. He studied with Professors R.-J. Kimstedt, Hans Maile, Yfrah Neaman and David Takeno and also attended the famous masterclasses with Nathan Milstein in Zurich. He is first violinist with the Deutsche Symphony Orchestra Berlin (DSO) since 1992 and also worked as a freelance player with NDR Symphony Hamburg, Montreal Symphony, Oslo Opera, Berlin State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Deutsche Kammerakademie Potsdam, Orchestra de la Communidad de Valencia, as a co-leader of the Rostock Philharmonic and as principal and co-principal in the Berkeley Symphony.
He is responsible for building up the DSO string academy department over a period of several years by mentoring talented young musicians. He also founded a string orchestra for them which he led as concertmaster, and organized a chamber music series.
Since forming his own chamber music group from 2001 until 2008, the Akanthus Ensemble Berlin, his concern has been to create fresh ways to hear and understand classical music. Karsten has also produced several CDs with his musicians. In concert he presents not only traditional and contemporary music, but also more popular styles like Argentinian Tango or Russian Folk Music. Through introduction of the artists, the composers and their works, he gives his audiences the inside perspective of an experienced musician on each musical program. In 2005 he took a sabbatical from the DSO and now devotes more of his time to the idea of musical introduction.
The 2005/06 season of DSO chamber music included Karsten Windt’s interpretive introductions for a concert series related to Mozart’s 250th birthday. He also planned and introduced the opening concert of the “Salon Noir,” the title given to a series presented in connection with the exhibit “Melancholy: the Genius and Madness of Art” at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, in which music and the projection of paintings were combined in thematic relationships. He also recently developed, in cooperation with hotels and restaurants like the Ritz-Carlton in Berlin, the Ristorante Tristán in Mallorca, Spain, and the International Club, a new kind of concert that combines music, wine and exclusive menues for very special culinary-musical events.
He has a big place in his heart for children. He moderated DSO concerts for children and youth - both chamber music and symphonic repertoire - because he understands that the future of classical music lies not only with our young musicians but also with our young audiences.
Karsten talks about music not only in German, but also in English and French. In 2006 and 2007 he introduced a series of concerts at Forest Hill Musical Days, a chamber music festival in San Francisco under the direction of internationally reknown pianist Mari Kodama. Since acquiring his residency in the US he now splits the time for his creative work to both continents, currently playing chamber music in San Francisco and giving various, often exclusive private recitals in the Bay Area.
